c.1200 yole in The Ormulum; later yoole in Merlin (c.1450); developed from Old English geol, geola Christmastide (before 899). Probably borrowed from Scandinavia, the Old English word giuli recorded by Bede (726) as the name of December and January corresponds to Old Icelandic ylir the Yule month.
